Since the election, the Southern Poverty Law Center has reported an increase in the number of hate crimes You have probably read about the unusual increase of these incidences in our Contra Costa County. Even at two of our local SRVUSD high schools, there has been racist graffiti. What will be our response? What can we, as citizens, do to improve the situation?
Our school district panelists will give examples of how our school district has responded with “No Place For Hate” educational experiences. Other panelists will give examples of how to respond when we as citizens hear or see bigoted behavior. For example, how we can deflect it, or say things that affirm our own morality but in a non-threatening way.
Panelists include Rachel Hurd, School Board Member, San Ramon Valley Unified School District; Gary Leveque, San Ramon Valley Education Association (Teachers Union); Seth Brysk, AntiDefamation League; Antonio Medrano, ACLU, Chair Berkley-North East Bay Chapter; Spojmie Nasiri, President, Council on American-Islamic Relations, Immigration Attorney; Ben-David Barr, Executive Director, Rainbow Community Center, Kavneet Singh, Sikh American Legal Defense & Education Fund, with moderator Ann Noel, President, California Association of Human Relations Organizations (CAHRO). This event is free, although we are requesting a $5 donation.
Organized by the San Ramon Valley Democratic Club, this Forum is a way to reach out to our community. Our club represents Danville, San Ramon, Alamo and parts of Walnut Creek. We invite you to attend our dinner meetings the 4th Thursday of the month. We have expert speakers from UC Hastings School of Law and UC Berkeley who speak on important issues. RSVP to this event.
