Shelley Clark 3 March 2023Our first lcoal speaker is Shelley Clark, a Board Trustee of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District for District 2, having been elected in November 2020. Before that, she was an active parent volunteer, serving as PTA President, Auction Chair, Fundraising Chair at several schools. She also served as Registration Chair and Grad Night Chair at San Ramon Valley High School. In addition to those roles, Shelley was instrumental in bringing the first Online Registration System to Charlotte Wood Middle School and to San Ramon Valley High School.

Shelley will speak on “How Do Books Make it Into SRVUSD Libraries and Why the Controversy?” She will explain how books are chosen and the process they go through before being placed in our school libraries. Get the facts behind this “non-controversy.”

Marivel Mendoza Hijas Del Campo Our second local speaker is Marivel Menoza who is a first generation Mexicana born and raised in Oakland, currently living in Oakley. Her parents migrated North America from Mexico to the US looking for more opportunities. Now their children are thriving, proud of where they came from and the people and the communities who helped forge their characters. Marivel is the mother of two wonderful boys, a wife and tia.

Marivel is the Founder and Director of Hijas del Campo which helps immigrant farm workers in Contra Costa County. Hijas del Campo was born in a direct response to the unprecedented pandemic and fires of 2020. It started with four women giving back to their Gente (people). They started by providing PPE and quickly expanded to assist with everything from vaccination appointments & clinics, to food as well as bill and rental assistance for those who were unable to work due to Covid-19 and did not qualify for government stimulus or sick pay. As a Contra Costa County based non-profit organization they aim to help migrant and seasonal farmworkers, along with their families, to improve their daily life, working conditions, health, and safety. Their goal is to ensure that every farmworker has access to basic necessities.

April Rovero 5Our third local speaker is April Rovero, who following the tragic overdose death of her 21-year-old son Joey, founded the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse (NCAPDA) and has worked since 2010 to prevent prescription drug related substance use disorder (SUD) and overdose deaths through community education, policy change and legislation advocacy. She also leads the coalition’s effort to distribute free naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone, to at risk community members.

In addition to her work with NCAPDA, April is an active member of several other drug prevention coalitions and is a member of multiple advisory boards of agencies working to prevent drug abuse and overdose. April has received numerous award recognizing her work, including from the American Red Cross, California Society of Addiction Medicine, California Narcotic Officers Association and most recently, the Contra Costa Office Of Education.
