The San Ramon Valley Democratic Club is pleased to welcome Professor Joel Richard Paul from the University of California Hastings Law School. Professor Joel Paul will discuss the promise and the reality of globalization, how free trade has led to a regulatory race to the bottom, and how we can harness globalization to raise environmental and labor standards at home and abroad.

Joel Paul Unlikely Allies Joel Richard Paul is a professor and former Associate Dean of Global Programs at the University of California Hastings Law School. He teaches international trade law and policy, international business transactions, and constitutional law. He previously taught on the law faculties of Yale, the University of Connecticut, Leiden (Netherlands), and American University. He studied at Amherst College, the London School of Economics, Harvard Law School, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and was a Fulbright Scholar in the Netherlands. He has published books and articles in the United States and abroad on trade policy, globalization, and foreign relations law.

His books include FUNDAMENTALS OF U.S. FOREIGN TRADE POLICY (Westview Press) (with Stephen Cohen and Robert Blecker) and UNLIKELY ALLIES: How a Merchant, a Playwright and a Spy Saved the American Revolution, which was named one of the best books of 2009 by The Washington Post.Joel Paul Trade Policy His forthcoming book, Without Precedent: The Invention of John Marshall will be published by Penguin Random House in 2017.
