The San Ramon Valley Democratic Club opposes AB1139:
The Executive Board of the San Ramon Valley Democratic Club strongly opposes AB1139, a bill that would make it much harder and more expensive for millions of Californians to produce and store the energy produced by roof-top solar systems. The measure, which is heavily supported by the utility industry, would force cuts in net metering, the credit that rooftop solar users get for the extra energy they produce and that currently goes back to the grid, and would add hefty extra fees to the monthly bills of users. Much of the financial burden of such changes would fall on low-and middle-income home owners and renters.
Moreover, solar energy is a critically important component of our state’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and combat climate change. Its increasing adoption over the past two decades has created thousands of new jobs, but opponents of AB1139 warn that adoption of the bill could kill the solar industry in California. Opponents of AB1139 comprise dozens of organizations, including Earthjustice, the Northern California Land Trust, 350 Silicon Valley, CALPIRG, Climate Hawks Vote, Defenders of Wildlife, Environment California, Food and Water Watch, San Francisco League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, and many chapters of Indivisible.
The bill must be voted on by the Assembly by June 4, so time is of the essence. In anticipation of the possibility that it could reach the desk of Governor Newsom for his signature, members are encouraged to sign a petition opposing its passage at https://www.savecaliforniasolar.org/sign-petition.
We are happy to report that on June 2, 2022, the Assembly voted not to pass AB1139. We thank our Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan for voting against this bill.
