Professor Price at SRVDC Meeting October 25, 2018

IMG_9457The San Ramon Valley Democratic Club welcomed Professor Zachary Price, Professor at UC Hastings College of Law, at our Thursday, October 25, 2018 meeting. Speaking on “Constitutional Law in a Polarized Era” he pointed out some important facts. For example, when President Obama used his Executive Privilege to grant rights to DACA students, we should be as accepting of a Republican president’s Executive privilege. Or perhaps we should want to limit the powers of a president. Unfortunately, during a polarized era, Congress cannot agree on legislation, and then the president would also have to approve that legislation. In a polarized era, Congress is stymied and presidential powers come into play. Our SRVDC club would counter that Trump is a very corrupt president, and any of his executive privileges are suspect from the beginning.

On Monday, September 17 the San Ramon Valley Democratic Club had a party, a time when we could meet and talk in an informal setting. We thank our members Pam and Steve Lorenz for opening their lovely home for this event. To begin the party, Ken Richard came to do one of his Post Card Parties. About 12 people participated as we wrote about 150 postcards to voters in CD22, encouraging them to vote for Andrew Janz rather than Trump’s puppet Devin Nunes. Many more people attended, and we all brought hor d’ourvres and drinks and had a great time. Our club’s endorsed candidates Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, Sabina Zafar and Shawn Kumagai attended as well as Danville’s Mayor Newell Arnerich.

We look forward to hearing some wonderful speakers next year. We hope you will join us. We meet at the Crow Canyon Country Club the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:00 for networking, then Buffet Dinner at 6:30 with the meeting at 7:00 pm. The country club has raised prices just a bit, so dinners will be $29 for members, and $34 for nonmembers.

The San Ramon Valley Democratic Club now “has a seat at the table.” The Democratic Party of Contra Costa County (DPCCC) voted to approve that each each club has one voting member on the DPCCC’s central committee. This is huge and our club looks forward to having a vote on what happens at the county level. We congratulate our members Rick Adler as Voting Member and Bryan Lawver as the Alternate.
