SRVDC’S RESPONSE TO THE BRUTAL KILLING OF GEORGE FLOYD

Once again, our country faces the ugly history of inequality and racism that led to the murder of George Floyd. We cannot ignore the deaths and unjust treatment of black people in our communities, including the recent murders of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor in her home. We need to acknowledge and realize the full extent of systematic racism. We must recognize and begin to address our own racial biases. We need to acknowledge the benefits that “white privilege” affords us, and work to rectify the disparity in racial inequality. We cannot rely only on electing progressive candidates. We each should play a role in rooting out the systemic racism that occurs in education, employment, the criminal justice system and pervades all life experiences. At this moment in our history, we cannot understand and we cannot pretend to understand all that is needed, but we must work together for change. Let us remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words:

“Let me say as I’ve always said, and I will always continue to say, that riots are socially destructive and self-defeating. … But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the Negro poor has worsened over the last few years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice, equality, and humanity. And so in a real sense our nation’s summers of riots are caused by our nation’s winters of delay. And as long as America postpones justice, we stand in the position of having these recurrences of violence and riots over and over again.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
