Schools & Communities First

On Thursday, March 28, 2019 the San Ramon Valley Democratic Club was proud to unanimously endorse the ballot measure “Schools & Communities First Funding Act.” If it is passed at the 2020 election, this measure will bring in billions of funding for public education K-14.

How does this reform work? What is the background? When Proposition 13 was passed, we loved it, because it kept property taxes low. What we didn’t know, until later, was this applied also to commercial property. The problem is that when companies sell property, they avoid the increase in property taxes, because they have hundreds of lawyers on staff who find loopholes, and essentially evade the increase. This ballot measure will close the commercial property loophole. It will make corporations pay their fair share in taxes. We need to all get everyone united to support this ballot measure. As stated above, it will generate billions annually to fund K-14 education.

But this initiative was not new to SRVDC. At its July 25, 2013 meeting, members heard a speaker from the organization Evolve who explained Proposition 13 Reform. On October 24, 2013, the San Ramon Valley Democratic Club passed the resolution Close the Commercial Property Loophole. Our goal was to make businesses pay their fair share. That Resolution has been on the SRVDC web site for 5 years! We are thrilled that something is finally being done! Thank you EVOLVE for beginning the conversation.

SRVDC’s next step will be to help get this information to voters in Danville and San Ramon. If you would like to help, email Brodie Hilp, the President of SRVDC.
