The San Ramon Valley Democratic Club welcomes Dr. Jacob Charles, Associate Professor in Political Science at UC Berkeley. Prior to his 4 years at UCB, he was an Associate Professor at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. He will speak on his research in which he studies whether peoples’ emotions undermine democratic norms or accountability. Other research concerns whether voter outreach campaigns can reduce polarization among political activists. Dr. Boockman received his Ph.D. in Political Science from UC Berkeley in 2015 and his B.A. in Political Science from Yale University in 2011.
Dr. Charles will address the issue of the Second Amendment. He writes and teaches on the Second Amendment, and his primary research interests include the legal regulation of state and private violence, Second Amendment doctrine and theory, and the place of guns in the criminal legal system.
Professor Charles graduated magna cum laude from Duke Law School. During law school, he served as notes editor for the Duke Law Journal and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He also holds an M.A. in political science with an emphasis in normative political theory and political institutions from Duke University. Prior to law school, Professor Charles earned M.A. degrees in theology and philosophy from Biola University and a bachelor’s degree in criminology, law, and society & psychology and social behavior from the University of California, Irvine.

Tim Grayson is the Assemblymember of District 15 which includes parts of Concord, Martinez and Antioch. He serves as Chair of the Assembly Banking and Finance Committee, is a member of the Appropriations Committee, Business and Professions Committee, and the the Revenue and Taxation Committee.
