The San Ramon Valley Democratic Club welcomes Dr. David Broockman, Associate Professor in Political Science at UC Berkeley. Prior to his 4 years at UCB, he was an Associate Professor at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. He will speak on his research in which he studies whether peoples’ emotions undermine democratic norms or accountability. Other research concerns whether voter outreach campaigns can reduce polarization among political activists. Dr. Boockman received his Ph.D. in Political Science from UC Berkeley in 2015 and his B.A. in Political Science from Yale University in 2011.
Dr. Broockman has won numerous scholarly awards, including UCB’s 2022-2023 Chancellor’s Award for Research in the Public Interest. In 2020, he won the Emerging Scholar Award from the American Political Science Association’s Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior section. In 2019, he shared the Joseph L. Bernd award for the best article published in the Journal of Politics. In 2017, he shared the Cialdini prize from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In 2015, he shared the Leamer-Rosenthal Prize for Transparency in the Social Sciences. In 2014, he won the Lawrence Longely award for the best paper published on representation and electoral systems.
Dr. Broockman has received many grants. He has received a grant from the Russell Sage Foundation ($158,250), the Democracy Fund ($50,000), the National Science Foundation ($666,276), the Walter and Evelyn Haas Jr. Fund ($10,000) and many more.
