The San Ramon Valley Democratic Club welcomes Conn Hallinan to find out what is happening in Europe. Europe is currently being swamped by a wave of right-wing nationalism that threatens the liberal consensus of the European Union and potentially the 28-member organization itself. But the origin of this disturbing wave of anti-immigrant, authoritarianism may lie more with the center than the right, and the failure of center-right, center, and center-left governments to deal with the impact of globalization and the flaws of the EU. There are a number of countervailing trends, however, that point to a way out of the politics of exclusion, trends that may resonate in the United States as well.
Conn M. Hallinan is a columnist for Foreign Policy In Focus, “A Think Tank Without Walls, and an independent journalist. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley. He oversaw the journalism program at the University of California at Santa Cruz for 23 years, and won the UCSC Alumni Association’s Distinguished Teaching Award, as well as UCSC’s Innovations in Teaching Award, and Excellence in Teaching Award. He was also a college provost at UCSC, and retired in 2004. He is a winner of a Project Censored “Real News Award,” and lives in Berkeley, California.
