Proposition 13 is an unfair giveaway to corporate real estate companies. Mark will discuss Evolve’s successes so far, its current campaign tactics, and its long term strategy to change what has continually been described as the “third rail of California politics.” Prop 13 was passed by voters to protect seniors on a fixed income – not multi-billion dollar corporations. Because of Prop. 13 the property tax burden on homeowners has gone up while corporations are paying less and less. The time has come to fix Prop 13 by keeping the protections for homeowners, but assessing commercial properties taxes at their fair market value. This single action would restore billions of dollars for education, police, fire, and infrastructure.
Mark is an active participant of Evolve, founded in 2011 by a group of Bay Area activists looking for a way to get beyond the current political mess. He has 9 years of experience managing political campaigns for progressive candidates and non-profits. He joined Evolve in December of 2012 after managing a campaign for Assemblymember Bill Quirk, an education advocate who won his Alameda County seat despite being outspent. Mark has broad experience in policy analysis, voter targeting, volunteer organizing, and organizational development. He recently completed his coursework for a Masters in Public Policy at UC Berkeley and expects his degree in 2013.

Steve is running for Assembly seat AD 16 when Assemblymember Joan Buchanan terms out in 2014. He is a champion of education. For example, as California State University Trustee, Steve is working to limit tuition increases and lower administrative costs. Locally, Steve has led several successful school funding measures and was recognized by school leaders for his championship of public education. He is an environmental leader.
A lifelong environmental advocate, Steve led efforts that raised hundreds of millions of dollars to permanently protect open space in California and 25 other states. His environmental leadership has been recognized by the Trust for Public Land and Save The Bay. As a fiscal manager, Steve helped the City of Orinda balance budgets for eight years while making prudent investments to improve schools, libraries, and roads. As an advisor to Governor Brown, he helped return California to solid financial footing.
