The San Ramon Valley Democratic Club looks forward to having Professor Arlie Hochschild, the renown sociologist and bestselling author, speak about her book, Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger & Mourning in the American Right, recognized as one of the 6 books to understand Trump’s Win according to the New York Times. From her hometown liberal Berkeley, Arlie travels to backwaters of bayou Louisiana to help the local rural, poor people with the pollution in Lake Charles and the high incidence of cancer. She lives there off and on for five years. Given her background she is able to reveal amazing insights into the heart of Trump supporters.

Arlie Hochschild graduated from Swarthmore College in 1962 and then earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, whose faculty she soon joined. She is also know for her book The Outsourced Self: Intimate Life in Market Times (2012) where she explores the “shifting boundary between market and intimate life and methods by which individuals manage that boundary to keep personal life feeling personal.”
